Club and Member Insurance

Fully paid Members benefit from two insurance policies that cover third party liability, (provided by England Athletics) and for personal accident insurance (provided by the running club through a policy with VELA Underwriting). The basic details of each policy and locations of further documents are outlined below.

Third Party Liability
Trentham Running Club is affiliated to England Athletics and this affiliation includes basic third party insurance cover.

As an athlete who has paid (or is deemed to have paid) subscriptions to a club or organisation affiliated to UKA, England Athletics, Scottish Athletics, Athletics Northern Ireland, or Welsh Athletics, or a Coach or Leader who has a current pass or licence, you are automatically provided with insurance cover which applies while you are involved in “athletics activities.” This cover currently runs until 31st October 2015 and only relates to legal liability in respect of third party bodily injury and third party property damage. Examples of cover include:

  • Bodily injury caused by your negligence to a third party (including athletes, club members etc),

  • Injury caused as a result of incidental first aid administered,

  • Accidental damage caused by your negligence to material property belonging to a third party, for instance damage caused to fences on land being used for a cross country race.

General points to note

  • This is not a personal accident policy (if an athlete trips over their own shoelaces and breaks an arm, there is no automatic compensation).

  • There is no cover provided when athletes are training independently of their club (e.g. out for a run at night on their own causing injury to a member of the public).

  • If injury or damage is caused by a deliberate act or omission there is no cover.

  • Athletes have a duty to take reasonable care and to comply with reasonable guidance documents such as the Clubs "Winter running guidance". Failure to act in a reasonable manner may result in cover being refused.

Full details of the current certificate and insurance information can be found on the England Athletics website at www.britishathletics.org.uk/governance/insurance

All incidents of injury or property damage to third parties must be reported as soon as possible, regardless of whether a claim is likely:

Some examples of cover include;

  • A lump sum of £25,000 for death or serious injury,

  • A scale of benefits for less serious injuries,

  • For temporary total disablement which prevents one from engaging in any employment, a payment after 4 weeks, for 2 years, of £250 per week or 100% of net weekly wage whichever is the less,

  • For temporary partial disablement which prevents one from engaging in any employment, a payment after 4 weeks for up to 2 years of £100 per week or 40% of net weekly wage whichever is the less.

General points to note;

  • The cover only applies if the member is over 16 years of age and gainfully employed,

  • Athletes have a duty to take reasonable care and to comply with reasonable guidance documents such as the Clubs "Winter running guidance". Failure to act in a reasonable manner may result in cover being refused.
