January 2010 News

Happy New Year everyone and welcome to another year in the fabulous history of Trentham Running Club. I have no doubt that we will continue with our fine performances throughout the year and good luck to all those of you who are racing.

Trig Point Race

The first report of the season comes from the fells, well, trails to be precise, of Cannock Chase where the Trig Point Fell Race was taking place. The usual route is around 15 miles (if you get it right, unlike I did) but was this year shortened to 12 miles missing out the Castle Ring section of the race due to the severe weather we have been experiencing! Having done this race myself I can fully understand the decision as last year the main track up to the castle ring was extremely icy and dangerous.

Of the Trentham runners that took part dale Colclough was the pick of the bunch coming 2nd in the M50 category and 12th overall in a time of 1:32:29. Del salt came 4th in the Ladies race in a time of 1:38:44.

Birmingham Cross Country

The Penultimate round of the Birmingham League Men's Cross country and Midland League Ladies Cross Country took place at the weekend. Men's action took place at Burbage Common, a place renowned for it's deep mud and wet conditions, even if there's been no rain for a month. The Ladies action came from Wyven Park in Coventry and Del Salt has kindly sent in this report:

The penultimate race in the Midland Ladies Cross Country League took place on Saturday, this time on a wet, muddy and undulating course at Wyven Park in Coventry. The team consisted once again of the "FAB FIVE" - Sarah Johnson, Jo Donnelly, Debbie Thomas, Louise Clowes and Adela Salt, and with the senior team currently lying 7th overall, and the veteran team being 2nd overall with just 17 points separating them from the leaders, our ladies were intent on running hard and trying to claw back some points.

Sarah Johnson had her best run in the league so far, jumping a massive 21 places from last time to lead home Trentham ladies in 29th position. With Del Salt once again finishing 35th, Jo Donnelly finishing 40th, Debbie Thomas 61st and Louise Clowes 119th, this helped the team to their best score in the league so far and hopefully has closed the gap on some of the teams ahead of them. Lou's run was also fantastic as she leaped up by 10 positions and helped the veteran team to their best score this season. Fingers crossed this will now place Trentham lady vets 1st overall, and with just one race to go, it's going to be a close one for the overall Midland Ladies Veteran Team title.

Well done and thank you to all of you once again - the team spirit was brilliant and it made the visit to Coventry lots of fun.

If any ladies are interested in taking part in the final race in the league, it'll be held on Saturday 13th February in West Bromwich with Trentham gents also being there at the next one which will surely make an even bigger and extremely enjoyable team outing.

Thanks for the report Del and hopefully the fantastic ladies team will once again manage to grow even stronger for the final race of the series. If you are interested in running for the ladies team it is by NO MEANS an elite event and ALL lady members are encouraged to take part. You can be assured of a warm welcome to the team and your efforts will be greatly appreciated. Speak to Richard O'Keeffe or Adela Salt if you would like to run.

Whilst the Ladies were at Spinx, the Men's team headed to Nuneaton for a VERY muddy Burbage Common. Dale has sent in this report:

Birmigham Cross Country league 3rd fixture Burbage Common Nuneaton.

We had just six runners travelling to Nuneaton on Saturday so as six runners count we were cutting it very fine to say the least. Everyone was under instructions that injury was no excuse for dropping out and to crawl to the finish if necessary.

As it turned out we all finished. The conditions were really difficult A combination of wet muddy grass on top of hard ice ice made for very slippy ground on ¾ of the coarse the rest was a muddy trench. Oh and for good meashure they announced that a puddle part way round had become a lake. They weren’t joking it was above knee deep for about 20 yards.

Given the lack of quality training over the last few weeks due to the weather its fair to say that we all ran reasonably well. Sam was pick of the day, after a bit of pre race teasing from me he ran flat out for once.

Ian Yates 5th, Paul Gibbings 15th, Paul Burslem 27th, Dan Clowes 38th,
Dale Colclough 39th, Fireman Sam 40th.
We were 3rd team on the day but maintained our 2nd league position overall so still in the promotion spot.

Thanks for the report Dale, and look forward to joining you in West Bromwich for the final leg!

The results will be available for both the Ladies and Men's events soon which can be found on the cross country page HERE!

Midland XC Championships 2010

The 2010 Midland XC championships took place at Stafford Common this weekend with both the Men and Ladies succesfully getting teams out and also Sarah Johnson was racing in the U20 Ladies. Deb Thomas has sent in this report:

The Saturday of the MCAA Cross Country Championships started very chilly and even though the Sun was out, it did nothing to raise the temperature or calm the winds. Sarah was the first Trenthamer to run in the Under 20 category (5k) and managed to finish 3rd in her age group! This was despite her being trodden on at the start and having her shoe and sock torn through! Sara’s brilliant race should result in her being selected to run for the County again at some point. Well done Super Star!

At 2.25pm it was the Senior Ladies race (8k). The course involved two undulating large laps and included a new part of having to climb out of a ditch, twice! It was hard going on the legs because of the sludge and the sunshine was on occasions in the worst position so it was hard to see in front. First back across the line was Jo Donnelly, followed in by Lynne Callaghan, Debbie Thomas, Kerry Widdowson and Rose Wilson. This fantastic performance allowed the team to finish 5th overall!

For the mens race, they had to endure 3 large laps (12k) and no doubt the course would have been a lot more churned up for them. First in was Ian Yates, followed by Paul Gibbings, Dale Colclough, Dan Clowes, Paul Burslem, Steve Burrows, Adrian Pestell, Alan Lewis and Malcolm Rushton (not sure I got the order right!?) This meant the team finished 19th overall. Well done guys!!

Well done Debbie Thomas and thanks for the report!

The results for the Midland XC Champs can be found here!
